1. What is transfer printing?

Transfer printing applies a design that has been printed or cut onto a special transfer film or vinyl, using a heat press to bond it to the garment with controlled heat, pressure and time. It is carried out in-house at our branding factory in Earby. Transfers can carry full-colour graphics, gradients and fine detail, and work on light and dark fabrics.

2. Benefits

  • Full colour: suits complex, multi-colour logos and designs, with no extra cost per colour.
  • Works on most fabrics: cotton, polyester and blends, in light or dark colours.
  • Cost-effective for short runs: no screens to set up, so small quantities and individual names or numbers are practical.
  • Quick to produce: a good choice for smaller batches and urgent orders.

3. Things to know before you order

PointWhy it matters
FeelTransfers sit on the surface of the fabric, so large solid areas feel slightly heavier and less breathable than embroidery or sublimation.
DurabilityCorrectly applied transfers last well, but can crack or lift over time if washed too hot, ironed directly or tumble dried on high heat. Follow the care instructions below.
Heat-sensitive fabricsSome fabrics, coatings and waterproof membranes cannot take the press temperature. We check every garment against the manufacturer's guidance and will recommend another method if needed.
Colour matchingColours are matched as closely as possible to your brand colours and confirmed on your proof. Small variations from screen and Pantone references are normal.
Hi-vis and FR garmentsHi-vis and flame-resistant garments are branded only with special transfer substrates, applied in line with the garment manufacturer's recommendations, so that certified performance is maintained (for example fluorescence and retroreflection to EN ISO 20471, and flame resistance). Logos are positioned so they do not cover reflective tape. Decoration is recorded for every FR order (QP 105).

4. Perfect for

  • Uniform, workwear and hi-vis, in line with manufacturer recommendations
  • T-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies
  • Sports kit with names and numbers
  • Events, promotions and gifts

5. Artwork and approval

  • Send vector artwork (PDF, AI or EPS) where possible, or a PNG at 300 dpi at the size it will be printed.
  • Fonts should be converted to outlines, or supplied with the artwork.
  • You must own the artwork or have permission to use it (see QP 126).
  • We send a proof for approval before production. Production starts once the proof is signed off (QP 042), so please check spelling, colours, sizes and positions carefully. Logo positions are recorded so repeat orders match (QP 018).

6. Lead times and returns

Orders are normally despatched within 7–10 working days of artwork approval, subject to stock and order size. Transfer-printed goods are personalised, so they cannot be returned for change of mind or wrong size choice unless they are faulty or incorrectly supplied (see QP 008 and QP 126).

7. Care instructions

  • Wash inside out at 30°C, or as the garment's care label allows if lower.
  • Do not use bleach or fabric softener.
  • Tumble dry on low or line dry.
  • Iron on the reverse only, never directly on the print, and do not dry clean.
